These works focus on cars encountered after they have been burned, no longer functioning as vehicles but existing in a transformed state. Once associated with movement, purpose and direction, they are now fixed in place, their original function exhausted. Rendered with a high level of control and precision, the paintings draw attention to surface, structure and the effects of fire. Twisted metal, altered colour and damaged form are observed closely, allowing the material changes to become central to the image. The titles introduce a shift in meaning. Rather than movement through space, the work reflects a transition from one state to another. The journey is no longer physical, but material, where the object has passed through a process of change and arrived at something unresolved. What remains carries a sense of presence, despite the loss of function. As in other works, the subject exists beyond its initial purpose, held in place and reconsidered. The familiar is altered, existing somewhere between recognition and transformation. |
