In A Suspended State Of Happiness, 2013
Acrylic Paint on Canvas, 460 x 1100mm, Private Collection

In a Suspended State

This series focuses on moments held in place, drawn from photographic source material. Like a cinematic still, each painting captures a fragment of time, isolating it from a wider sequence and fixing it within the frame.

The works are presented in a widescreen format of 2.39:1, referencing contemporary anamorphic film. This establishes a visual language that sits between photography and cinema, where the image suggests a narrative without defining it. The viewer is invited to consider what has happened before and what might follow.

Rendered with a high level of control and precision, the paintings hold the image in suspension. As in other works, what would normally pass is fixed and reconsidered. Both the subject and the viewer are held in a moment of looking, where time is paused and attention is sustained.

"Simon Taylor’s photoreal paintings transcend not only photography but painting itself. ."
