‘Dr. Munscheid’ Paintings

The ‘Dr Munscheid’ paintings are a series of 27 works adapted from a family photograph album discovered in a Frankfurt flea market. The paintings were produced between 2008 and 2011.
The original photo album contains a mixture of interior and exterior shots of the Doctors’ house and surgery, together with portraits of colleagues and informal snaps of his family and pets in their overgrown gardens in Teutschenthal, Saxony-Anhalt.

Teutschenthal is in the former GDR and the photographs date from between 1957 and 1962. The album was intended as a gift for the Doctor’s daughter on the occasion of her 5th wedding anniversary in 1957. The later photographs have been slipped into the back of the album. The last photograph was dated August 1962; a year after the Berlin wall was constructed.
